Hearing set for man charged with kidnapping girlfriend

Advertiser Staff

A man arrested after police say he held his girlfriend underwater at Waimänalo Beach Park is due in court today.

Authorities say a preliminary hearing is set for 33-year-old Ipaapuka Carter after he was charged last week with kidnapping.

Police say Carter was seen arguing with his 21-year-old girlfriend when he allegedly dunked her head underwater, punched and kicked her at the park on Dec. 27.

A responding officer said he found the woman crying uncontrollably. She appeared to be hyperventilating and complained of pains to her head, face, neck and other areas.

The woman was released after being treated by medical personnel.

Prosecutors have said the kidnapping charges stem from the allegations that Carter did not let the woman leave the water.
