28-year-old man is Big Isle's first traffic fatality of 2010
Hawai'i County registered its first traffic fatality of the new year in the early-morning hours on New Year's Day.
Police said it appears speeding and alcohol were factors in the Big Island's first traffic death of 2010.
Darcy Aguil, 28, of Pāhala died Friday after a single-car crash on Pikake Street, police said.
Police said Aguil was traveling south at high speed when he lost control of a 1994 Nissan sedan just before midnight. The car hit a parked vehicle. Aguil, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.
Aguil was taken to Ka'ū Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:43 a.m. on New Year's Day.
Police ordered an autopsy. Police ask that anyone with information about this crash call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, ext. 229.
