Two games into the season, both Mililani and Radford coaches felt their players gained a valuable "learning experience," in a 56-37 Trojans' win in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West boys basketball game last night at Radford High School.

Mililani (2-0) emerged from the first quarter with a 19-7 lead behind nine points by senior forward Joe McGlamery, whose five early points inside the paint helped fuel an 11-4 run in the first three minutes of the game.

"What we wanted to do was get the ball inside because I think we had the height advantage," Mililani coach Ed Gonzales said. "Unfortunately Hassan (Richardson) got two quick fouls so we had to make adjustments.

"We tried to shut down the Radford shooters, (JB Fontenot and TJ Reid), and for the most part we had a hand in their face so we built a comfortable lead."

Mililani continued to hold down Radford's offense in the second quarter, holding the Rams to one field goal by Reid in the period to extend its lead to 30-13 at the half.

"We didn't get back on defense, we've been working on that for a while and we had a good practice yesterday," Radford coach Wayne Keys said. "We just got down and missed a lot of easy shots and got kind of frustrated."

The Rams put together their most complete effort in the third quarter, with an 8-0 run that closed the gap to 38-23.

Radford (1-1) continued with another 8-0 run to begin the fourth quarter to make it 40-31 with 5:26 to go.

"The problem was they started getting careless with the ball and we made turnovers and took bad shots," Gonzales said. "We let Radford back into the game. It shouldn't be like that, at the point when we're up by 20, we have to learn how to take care of the ball. But it was a learning experience."

The Rams wouldn't get any closer, as the Trojans went on a 16-2 run for their largest lead of the game at 56-33 with less than a minute to go.

Keys pointed to one significant moment that changed the game in the fourth quarter —a technical foul by one of his players that started the Trojans' run.

"We made a run and got (the lead) down, and got that technical. We have to keep our heads as players and coaches," Keys said. "That hurt us. We just lost it; we couldn't make shots after that. It's a learning experience for the kids."

Reid and Fontenot finished with 10 points each. McGlamery scored 15 for the Trojans, with Ed Ocampo adding 10.
