A 60-year-old visitor from Japan remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon at The Queen’s Medical Center after being hit by a van while walking through a crosswalk on Kaiolu Street in Waikiki Thursday morning.
Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics were called to the intersection of Kuhio Avenue and Kaiolu a little past 9:30 a.m.
Paramedics treated the woman and transported her to the trauma center in critical condition, Cheplic said.
Police vehicular homicide investigators said a woman from Waikiki was headed east on Kuhio Avenue in a 2000 Plymouth Voyager van when she made a left turn onto Kaiolu and hit the woman who was crossing Kaiolu from east to west.
The pedestrian, who was in a crosswalk, was knocked to the ground and suffered a severe head injury, police said.
The van driver was not injured in the incident.
Speed, alcohol and drug use did not appear to be factors in the case, police said.
