No. 1 Punahou boys turn back 'Iolani, 46-31

Malik Johnson scored 16 points and DeForest Buckner added 14 last night to help Punahou defeat visiting 'Iolani, 46-31, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

The Buffanblu, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 4-0 in the ILH. The No. 3 Raiders fell to 3-2.

Punahou led 22-15 at halftime, but 'Iolani closed the margin to one point in the third period, before the Buffanblu pulled away in the fourth.

Jarrett Arakawa led the Raiders with 10 points.

Two of 'Iolani's top scorers, Kainoa Chu and Trevyn Tulonghari, were held to four and three points, respectively.

"We shot really poorly," Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said. "We were 7 of 27 on two-pointers and 3 for 12 on 3-pointers. And we got out-rebounded 39-21."
