Ocean sports: 25th Ala Wai Challenge Sunday

The 25th annual Ala Wai Challenge is scheduled for Sunday at the Ala Wai Playground.

The event features outrigger canoe races and Hawaiian Makahiki games, as well as musical entertainment and food booths.
Each year, the event honors significant members of Hawaiçi’s ocean sports community. This year’s honorees are Hannie Anderson and Tay Perry.
Anderson is one of the founders of the Na Wahine O Ke Kai canoe race, and has been its race director every year since the first one in 1979. She is also a former president of the Oçahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.
Perry is a master canoe builder and longtime paddler for Lanikai and Outrigger canoe clubs. He is also the vice president of the Friends of Hokuleça and Hawaiçiloa, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the perpetuation of Hawaiian canoe building traditions and values.
The event is scheduled to start around 8 a.m., and end around 1:30 p.m.
