NEW YORK — People familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that the New York Yankees and free agent outfielder Randy Winn are trying to reach a deal, which would all-but-eliminate any chance Johnny Damon has of returning to the World Series champions.
The people spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because a final agreement was not in place. The agreement would be for about $2 million, one of the people said.
Winn hit .262 with two homers and 51 RBIs for the San Francisco Giants last year. The 35-year-old was an All-Star in 2002, when he batted .298 with 14 homers and 75 RBIs for Tampa Bay.
