Wilcox school fire extinguished by alert citizen

Advertiser Staff

A man who lives across the street from Wilcox Elementary School is credited with extinguishing a fire at a portable classroom Wednesday night, saving it from destruction.

Herbert Honjo saw what he initially thought were flickering lights behind the portable around 9 p.m., Kauai police said.
When Honjo realized that it was a fire, he ran across the street and used a garden hose next to the portable to douse the fire.
Police said the fire was completely extinguished when they arrived on the scene and that an investigation on the cause is under way.
Damage to the entry deck, door and a window of the portable is estimated at $3,000.
