A Big Island man has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his wife.

Steven Dingle, 47, of Mountain View was arrested Saturday night following a disturbance in South Hilo.

Police officers responded to a 6:23 p.m. call Saturday of an attack at a Kamehameha Avenue address in South Hilo and found a woman who had been stabbed several times.

Witnesses to the attack detained Steven Dingle.

The victim was identified as Catherine Dingle, 38, of Mountain View. She was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. Doctors performed emergency surgery, but she was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. Sunday.

Hawai'i County police on Sunday charged Steven Dingle with second-degree murder. He is being held in the police cellblock in Hilo in lieu of $1 million bail.

Police yesterday said they have not determined a motive for the stabbing.

Police are asking for the public's help in this case and ask that anyone with information about it call Detective Derek Morimoto at 961-2380 or the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. All CrimeStoppers information is kept confidential.
