UH swimmer, coach earn top Conference USA Invitational honors
University of Hawaii
University of Hawai‘i freshman Luca Mazzurana was named the Conference USA Invitational Swimmer of the Meet, and UH head coach Victor Wales was named Coach of the Meet, following the four-day invitational.
UH finished in second place at the Conference USA Invitational, which finished Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors scored 833 points, the second most since joining CUSA. UH narrowly lost out to defending champion SMU, who had 871.
Mazzurana won the 200-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly and finished third in the 200-yard butterfly and on the relay team in the 400-yard medley relay. Mazzurana is the second UH swimmer to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors out of the past five years.
Wales led UH to a second place finish for the third time in a row. UH closed the gap on points from the previous year and has continued to push SMU at the Conference USA Invitational. This is the first CUSA Coach of the Meet honor for Wales. He was named WAC Coach of the Year in 2006.
Competing in the C-USA Men's Invitational are league school teams East Carolina and SMU, as well as invited teams from Hawai‘i, Cal State Bakersfield and North Dakota. SMU won the invitational with 871 points, followed by Hawai‘i with 833 points. Cal State Bakersfield earned third-place honors with 534 points, while East Carolina (516) and North Dakota (304) took fourth and fifth, respectively.
