'Iolani, Roosevelt top seeds in hoops

'Iolani and Roosevelt received the top seeds for this week's Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Championships.

'Iolani (12-2), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is the top seed in Division I.

Moanalua (15-1), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, is seeded second and Hilo (11-4), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, is third.

Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna (12-2) is fourth. All seeded teams receive a first-round bye and begin play in Thursday's quarterfinals.

First-round action begins Wednesday at Radford and McKinley. Friday's and Saturday's games will be played in the Stan Sheriff Center. The championship game is Saturday at 7 p.m.

Kamehameha (12-4), the defending state champion, plays Honoka'a (9-4) at 4 p.m. today in a play-in game to advance to the state tournament.

OIA White champion Roosevelt (13-2) is the top seed in Division II, which scaled back the tournament from 12 teams to eight this year. Roosevelt opens Thursday's quarterfinals against Pāhoa (6-9) at Farrington.

MIL champion Seabury Hall (10-0) is seeded second and plays either Academy of the Pacific or Hawai'i Baptist in Thursday's quarterfinals at Kalani. Academy of the Pacific (14-3) and Hawai'i Baptist (8-9) meet in a play-in game today to advance to the state tournament.

BIIF champion St. Joseph (11-3) is third and plays Kailua (12-4) at Kalani. Saturday's games will be played in the Stan Sheriff Center with the championship game at 5 p.m.

University High (14-1), the ILH champion, is seeded fourth and plays Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kapa'a (11-2) at Farrington.
