The Rotary Club of Kīhei-Wailea is wrapping up the sale of custom-engraved bricks that have funded more than $35,000 in scholarships and support for teachers on Maui, the Maui News reported.

The project is aimed at supporting "homegrown" teachers on Maui — those who sometimes are faced with quitting a job in order to complete their certification training.

"Bricks for Teachers" project chairperson Lis Richardson, a past president of the Rotary Club, developed the fundraising idea about a year and a half ago. Since then, the club and its supporters have installed more than 200 custom bricks interspersed in a courtyard of 1,500 bricks near the Kama'ole Beach Park III swing set.

The Rotary Club of Kīhei-Wailea will be accepting custom brick orders until March 30, with installation estimated to occur sometime in May. Orders may be placed at www.RCKW.org; follow the link to the Bricks for Teachers order form. Richardson can be reached at 344-5777 for more information.

The 4-inch by 8-inch clay custom bricks allow up to three lines of text, each 20 spaces long, and cost $130. More than 200 personalized bricks installed already commemorate special dates, events and even pets.
