Kauai mayor touts mass-notification service for emergencies

Associated Press

LIHUE, Hawaii — Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. is encouraging Garden Island residents and businesses to sign up for the county’s free mass notification service.

The system called Connect CTY is designed to quickly spread information about such civil defense emergencies as tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes and flash floods. It can also be used in other situations affecting safety, property or welfare.
Connect CTY was used last Saturday evening to notify thousands of residents and businesses by phone, e-mail and pager about the tsunami threat and later notified the same people about the tsunami cancellation notice.
Carvalho says the system augmented other venues of public notification, such as news releases, radio and TV interviews and the Internet.
