Waianae's Bartels second in Roxy Pro women’s surfing contest

Melanie Bartels of Waianae placed second in the Roxy Pro women’s surfing contest today at Australia.

The final day of the contest was run in 2- to 3-foot waves at Snapper Rocks, Coolangatta, Australia.

Three-time defending world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia defeated Bartels in the one-on-one final, 12.4-10.36.

Bartels needed a score of 6.08 to win the final in the closing minutes, but fell on her last wave.

Gilmore received $15,000 and maintained her No. 1 ranking on the ASP Women’s World Tour. Bartels received $9,000 and is now ranked No. 2.

Coco Ho of Sunset Beach tied for third place. She was eliminated by Gilmore in the semifinals.

It was the first event on the 2010 women’s world tour.
