A 54-year-old Mililani man was charged yesterday with second-degree attempted murder in connection with the shooting of his neighbor Sunday night.

Michael J. Graham also was charged with four counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Graham's bail was set at $150,000, and he is scheduled to make his initial court appearance today.

Graham is accused of shooting Jerome Cristobal several times as Cristobal smoked a cigarette in the backyard of his home on Kaholo Street. Police said one of Cristobal's sons joined him and asked for a cigarette when they heard a loud "pop" shortly before 10 p.m.

Cristobal told his son that he had been shot and the son screamed for help, police said. Another son, a daughter and her boyfriend ran out of the house to help Cristobal, police said.

The 16-year-old daughter said she saw Graham standing in his yard next to the wall and asked him to call for help, according to a police affidavit filed in Hono- lulu District Court. At that point, the affidavit said, the girl noticed that Graham was holding a gun.

The girl pleaded with Graham not to shoot, but she told police that Graham pointed the gun at them and fired six to seven more rounds, several of which struck Cristobal, the affidavit said. The family members helped Cristobal into the home before he was taken by ambulance to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with wounds to his chest, lower right rib and right bicep.

His condition was later upgraded to serious.

Police were called and arrested Graham at his home. Officers also found a black revolver on the kitchen table in his home, the affidavit said.

Police did not provide a motive for the shooting, but a neighbor said yesterday that the Cristobal home was the scene of constant noise and loud parties that run into the early morning hours.

Homer Burge, who lives across the street from Graham and Cristobal, said he's called police many times to report noise from the Cristobal home. Burge said that did not quell the noise.

"Those people will drive anybody nuts," said Burge, 85.

He described Graham and his resident girlfriend as quiet people and "good neighbors." But Burge said Graham probably couldn't take the noise anymore.

Members of the Cristobal family could not be reached for comment.

Burge said he knew that Graham owned a gun, but didn't think he'd ever use it.

"I told Mike, 'It's not worth really doing something to get in trouble. It just ain't worth it,' " Burge said. "He kept telling me, 'Homer, you stay away from those guys. You never know what they're going to do.' "
