Man, 66, killed after being hit by two cars in Kahului

A 66-year-old pedestrian died yesterday morning after two vehicles hit him on Pu'unēnē Avenue in Kahului.

A Maui police news release said the man was crossing Pu'unēnē Avenue about 5:35 a.m. when he was hit by a sedan and then a pickup truck. Both vehicles were traveling in the northbound lanes.

The man, who has no local address, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was being withheld until his relatives are notified.

Police said the car, a 2006 Toyota, was driven by a 21-year-old Lahaina woman and the truck, a 1992 Mazda, by a 58-year-old Kīhei man. Neither driver was injured.

Police said it was fatality is Maui's third traffic fatality of 2010, compared to four at the same time last year.
