Focus on females tonight

Advertiser Staff

JACO Rehab will be hosting a free seminar discussing the growing incidence of knee injuries in female athletes and the steps that can be taken to prevent this injury from occurring.

All coaches, trainers, parents and players are welcome to this seminar at 6 p.m. today on the seventh floor of The Honolulu Club.

JACO Rehab — named after Jaco Van Delden, a physical therapist — will sign up those interested for testing later in the week. Testing will reveal areas of weakness and help educate coaches, parents and athletes on preventive exercises such as strength, balance, core strength, fitness and control.

Last season, about 70 Honolulu Bulls female soccer players were tested.

Some of Hawai'i's top athletes such as basketball players Nani Cockett, and Shawna and Shaena Kuehu suffered ACL injuries during their careers. Cockett and Shawna Kuehu both suffered such injuries while in high school and at the University of Hawai'i.

Typically, an athlete will miss six to nine months of competitive play as a result of the injury, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation.

Those interested should RSVP to Marissa at marissa@jacorehab.com or via phone at 381-8947.
