Kauai County, UPW sign agreement on automated trash pickup

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i County and UPW officials on Tuesday signed a supplemental agreement on an automated refuse collection service for up to 3,200 homes in Puhi, Lihu'e and portions of Hanama'ulu starting July 1.

The county is providing homes with the 96-gallon bin and says one equipment operator can service up to 33 percent more collection units per day than a manual collection system, which requires three employees.
The rubbish pickup schedule will be changing, even for those who are not yet converting to the automated program.
“The Solid Waste Division will be undertaking a massive public information campaign to ensure that the bins are distributed and the public is informed of the changes and new requirements well before the July 1 rollout date,” said County Engineer Donald Fujimoto, who heads the Department of Public Works, in a statement.
Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said the equipment used for the program will also be used for curbside recycling as that service becomes available.
