HFD finds no missing hikers, calls off search

Advertiser Staff

HFD this morning called off its search for reported missing hikers
in Makaha.

Rescue units resumed their search this morning at 6:23 a.m.

Air-1 flew over the area where flashing lights were last seen Saturday night, said HFD Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The search was called off at about 7:15 a.m. after efforts failed to turn up any signs of a distressed hiker. Unless new information is received, the incident is closed, Kealoha said.

HFD had responded to a 8 p.m. call Saturday from someone who reported seeing lights in the mountains. Dispatchers later received a call from one of the hikers, but crews were unable to locate the party.

A rescue helicopter scanned the area but also could not locate the hikers.

The search was suspended at 9:20 p.m. Saturday. Crews resumed the search this morning at first light.
