Maui police are investigating a report of an assault on a 12-year-old student in a Maui Waena Intermediate School restroom Thursday, the Maui News reported.

About 1:40 p.m. Thursday, a girl was in a restroom on the Kahului campus when an unidentified man who was in the bathroom grabbed her and threw her to the ground, said Lt. John Jakubczak of the police Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the girl pushed away the man, who ran out of the restroom.

The man was described as having a black shirt wrapped on his head.

Maui Complex Area Superintendent Bruce Anderson said the "safety of our students is utmost in our minds. We are reviewing what happened. We are reviewing our plans."

Anderson said the Department of Education is working with the staff and the community to make sure the campus is safe.
