County council planning to modify property tax rates

Advertiser Staff

Maui County Council members have moved to lower the tax rates for bed-and-breakfast owners on the island, but taxes on unimproved residential properties will go up.

Maui County Council members last week agreed to lower the tax rates on bed-and-breakfast operations to $4 per $1,000 of assessed property value, down from $5.

But to make up for lost revenue, the council raised the tax rate on undeveloped residentially zoned lands from $6 to $6.25.

After nearly six weeks of debate on the budget, the council's Budget and Finance Committee is scheduled to return today to vote on the $524.2 million spending plan for 2011.
