State tourney on Big Island

The Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships start today at the Holua Tennis Center and Outrigger Keauhou Resort on the Big Island.

In the boys draw, defending champion Jared Spiker of Kalani is seeded first. Island Pacific's Matt Westmoreland is second and 'Iolani's Marco Kobayashi is third. In doubles, Paul Okuda and Travis Yoshimoto of Punahou are first, followed by Kamehameha's Marcel Chan and Roman Kop and Punahou's Brandon Lee and Erik Pang.

In the girls draw, Kealakehe's Sayo Tsukamoto is seeded first and Kaua'i's Sarah Kukino is second, followed by Sacred Hearts' Kelsey Daguio. In doubles, defending champions Jennifer Laws and Ashley Nakaoka of Punahou are seeded first. Bobbi Oshiro and Kristen Poei of 'Iolani are second and Mililani's Kimberley Takara and Melissa Monette are third.

Punahou has won the boys team title since 1991 and girls team title since 2003. Matches run through Saturday.
