HPU wins, UH Hilo loses at NCAA West Softball Regional
KANE'OHE — The top-seeded Hawai'i Pacific softball team beat No. 8 Central Washington, 6-1, in its opener at today's NCAA Division II West Regional at its Howard A. Okita Field in Kane'ohe.
Maile Kim hit a two-run homer and had a RBI single for the Sea Warriors (42-6). Nicole Morrow had a RBI single and Chante Tesoro had a two-run single in the win.
In the regional opener, Diane Ortiz pitched a six-inning no-hitter as Cal State Monterey Bay defeated the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 8-0.
The game was called after six innings because of the mercy rule. CSUMB (33-18) advances to the winner's bracket against HPU at 11 a.m. tomorrow while UH Hilo (35-15) drops into tomorrow's consolation game against Central Washington (37-14) at 1:30 p.m. The championship game is on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Ortiz allowed two walks with three strikeouts.
Nicole Garcia batted 2-for-3 with one run scored and three RBIs, and Ortiz added two hits and a run for CSUMB. Jamie Moon and Channing Peebles each added two hits.
