A comfort station at Kakaako Makai Gateway park that was substantially damaged by a fire several years ago was demolished this morning.

The Hawaii Community Development Association says the demolition is part of a stimulus-driven package of repairs and improvements at Kakaako Makai Gateway Park, Kakaako Waterfront Park and Kewalo Basin. Work will include replacing light fixtures and pole along the oceanfront promenade and repairing cracking columns, picnic tables and showers.

Security gates will be added to comfort stations so they can be locked after hours.

The HCDA says the newly cleared area at Kakaako Makai Gateway Park will be planted with grass. There are no immediate plans to replace the comfort station.

Portable toilet facilities have been set up in the parking lot of the adjacent Kakaako Waterfront Park.
