The Hawaii County Police Department announced that Randy Apele has been promoted to the rank of major. The promotion took effect Monday.

Apele will now be assigned to Area II Operations in West Hawaii. He replaces John Dawrs, who retired at the end of last year.

Previously, Apele was captain of the Hamakua and North Hilo districts.
