Man rescued from 'Publics' surfing spot has died
A man who was pulled from waters off Waikīkī yesterday afternoon has died.
The man, who appeared to be in his 60s, was seen in distress near a surf spot known as "Publics" about 3:15 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department. Surfers in the area notified lifeguards, who brought the man to shore and performed CPR.
City paramedics treated the man and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Cheplic said. The cause of the man's death was under investigation.
Cheplic said surf conditions were "minimal" and that the ocean was "fairly calm" at the time of the incident.
