Hawaii families can apply for financial aid from energy-assistance program

Advertiser Staff

The Honolulu Community Action Program will start accepting applications June 1 for a program aimed at helping low-income families with their energy bills.

Because of the recession, HCAP is expecting an increase in applications this year for the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

In 2009, HCAP helped 4,260 families through the program.

The program helps families in one of two ways: Households struggling to pay bills can get a energy credit or those whose electricity is scheduled to be shut off can seek financial assistance to keep it on.

HCAP will accept applications at its five district centers through June 30.

For more information or application materials go to www.hcapweb.org or call 521-4531.
