Treatment for box jellyfish stings

DO NOT:

Treat the wound with alcohol of any kind, meat tenderizer or urine.

Rub or put pressure on the affected area.

DO:

Prevent stings: Avoid leeward waters 8 to 10 days after the full moon.

If stung, pour vinegar on any tentacles that remain on the skin.

Pluck off tentacles with tweezers, a stick or anything except bare hand.

Try hot packs or take a hot shower.

If heat doesn’t work, try ice. It might help with pain.

Call an ambulance if the following symptoms occur: shortness of breath, weakness, palpitations, muscle cramps, unbearable pain.
