Yoshichi Yoshida, former territorial legislator, dead at 96

KAPAA, Kauai — Former territorial legislator and veteran businessman Yoshichi Yoshida, 96, died Jan. 24, 2001.

He was born on Kauai and was the retired owner of Y. Yoshida Service Station and Bus Co. in Kapaa.

Yoshida was elected to the territorial House of Representatives as a Republican in 1956 and 1958. He lost in the first state general election in 1959.

Survivors include sons Hugh Yoshida, the University of Hawaii athletic director, and Reuben Yoshida; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral 3 p.m. tomorrow at Kapaa Hongwanji Mission.
