'Backyard Jam' set for Feb. 24

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol
Advertiser Staff Writer

It’s meant to be a fun way to deliver a serious message.

The Hawaiian Style Backyard Jam on Feb. 24, one of the Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month activities, will promote drug-free and healthy lifestyles.

The concert is aimed at boosting public awareness of substance-abuse issues, as well as encouraging people to get involved. This year’s theme is "The Solution Is In All Our Hands."

"We want people to feel the (positive) energy," said Cheryl Kameoka, interim executive director of Drug-Free Hawaii.

The event will feature local bands, including Kapena and Hoonua, information booths and lots of food. Professional surfers with Wave Riders Against Drugs will attend.

Sponsors include KDNN-FM (Island Rhythm 98.5), Hawaiian Style, Landmark Entertainment, MYTVJAMMS, Drug-Free Hawaii and Hawaii Medical Service Association.

The free concert is from 2 to 5 p.m. at Kakaako Waterfront Park. Call 545-3228, 1-800-845-1946; e-mail cdfh@pixi .com; or visit www.drugfreehawaii.org
