Recruiting donors for teachers

Too many of Hawaii’s teachers pay hundreds of dollars each from their own pockets to buy just basic classroom supplies and materials.

So Halawa Valley resident Margaret Ulm devised a plan: Her Adopt A Teacher Foundation matches community donors with teachers. Today there are more than 1,000 teachers registered with Adopt A Teacher, gratefully receiving help from donors from the business, government, private, public, nonprofit and community sectors.

"We need to help all children," says Ulm, 45. "If you miss one child, you miss one too many."
