An Oahu grand jury yesterday indicted a woman with a history of mental illness on a charge of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her husband.
Catherine T. Nakamura, 68, faces life in prison with parole if convicted. The state also is seeking an enhanced sentence requiring at least 15 years in prison because the victim was older than 60.
The Waianae woman was arrested Feb. 7 after she told a police officer who arrived at the 86-144 Puhano St. address, "I knifed my husband," according to police.
The officer was led to a bedroom where the body of George M. Nakamura, 68, was found face down in a pool of blood, a police affidavit stated. Asked where the knife was, Catherine Nakamura pointed to a knife on the kitchen counter and said she had washed the blood off, the affidavit said.
Her attorney, deputy public defender Todd Eddins, said he will pursue an insanity defense in the case.
Nakamuras bail was set at $100,000. Eddins said she is being held at the Womens Community Correctional Center in Kailua.
