Twelve men were inducted into the 2001 Class of the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Salevaa Atisanoe, Chris Duplanty, Sid Fernandez, Peter Fithian, Russ Francis, Maiola Kalili, Manuella Kalili, Mike Lum, Duncan Macdonald, Danny Ongais, Harold Sakata and Lenn Sakata were honored at the annual banquet.

Fernandez, Lum and Lenn Sakata all played in baseball’s World Series — Fernandez as a member of the 1986 New York Mets, Lum with the 1976 Cincinnati Reds and Sakata with the 1982 Baltimore Orioles.

Atisanoe, also known as Konishiki, was sumo’s first foreign-born wrestler to reach the rank of ozeki, or champion.

Duplanty was a three-time Olympian as a goalie in water polo.

Fithian, who admitted to not being an athlete during last night’s festivities, founded the Kona Billfish tournament.

Francis played tight end in the NFL for the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.

The Kalilis were silver medalists in the 4x200 freestyle relay in the 1932 Olympics.

Macdonald won three Honolulu Marathons and owned the U.S. record in the 5,000-meter run.

Ongais was the first Hawaii representative in auto racing’s Indianapolis 500.

Harold Sakata was a 1948 silver medalist in weightlifting, and later became famous playing the villain "Odd Job" in the James Bond movie, "Goldfinger."

The 12 inductees bring the total number of athletes in the Hall of Fame to 81.
