Video of news conference with Ehime Maru crew

Advertiser Staff

Crew members of the Ehime Maru yesterday recounted the sinking of their fishing vessel after it was struck by the U.S. submarine USS Greeneville.

At one point in the news conference Ryoichi Miya, the ship's first mate, was asked: "The U.S. admitted that one of the civilians was at the control position. Do you have any comment about this?"

Miya replied: "Civilian steers? As a seaman, I don't forgive it. A civilian, probably not enough knowledge — shouldn't steer a boat for practicing or training.

"This is disappointing."
