Several Hawaii community groups with ties to Japan have raised more than $17,000 for families of the victims of the Ehime Maru accident and for the Uwajima Fisheries High School.

Donations may be made at any First Hawaiian Bank branch. Checks can also be mailed to First Hawaiian Bank, P.O. Box 3200, Honolulu, HI 96847.

The Japan-America Society of Hawaii, Japanese Cultural Center, Japanese Chamber of Commerce, United Japanese Society of Hawaii and KIKU-TV are asking the public to contribute to the fund.

As of yesterday morning, $17,645 had been contributed to the fund.

Dennis Francis, general manager of The Honolulu Advertiser, yesterday said the newspaper’s community foundation will donate $10,000 to the fund.

Also yesterday, Honolulu police warned about a possible telephone scam that seeks cash donations for the Ehime Maru Fund.

A local radio station received three calls yesterday from people saying they had received a phone call from a person who knew their name and asked for donations, according to police.

People may contact the Japan-America Society at 524-4450 to verify information about organizations that have joined the effort. Any organization that wishes to join the fund-raising effort should call the same number.
