Age-of-consent bill not ripe for challenge
If the constitutional right to push bills is used carefully, then the Democrats will come across as anti-democratic if they use their vote strength to bottle things up. In the case of the age-of-consent legislation, matters were not yet ripe enough to bring things to a constitutional head.

State-UH faculty talks seem designed to fail
Obviously, UH faculty are long overdue for a raise. And the amount the union is seeking is not particularly out of line. But it may be more than the state can afford, given the press of other obligations. But within financial limits, the two sides should be working toward a package that offers the faculty the greatest flexibility and academic autonomy possible.

Teaching experience leaves me exhausted
Until teachers receive fair compensation, respect and a reduced workload, we can expect more teachers to leave the profession, as I did, terribly disillusioned about the prospects for teaching in this state. By Sandra Polhemus, a Honolulu resident.
