Kaua'i man sentenced to life for burning wife to death

Associated Press

LIHUE, Kauai — A Kauai man who killed his wife last year by setting her on fire was sentenced yesterday to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Gregory Aguiar, 50, apologized to the family of Miu Lan Esposo-Aguiar during the sentencing before Circuit Judge Clifford Nakea.

"I’m sorry for what I did," he said.

In December, Aguiar pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. In return for the plea, prosecutors agreed not to seek a sentence of life without the possibility of parole and also agreed to drop a reckless endangerment charge.

Esposo-Aguiar was set aflame during a quarrel with her husband in March 2000. She died 19 days later.
