Hawai'i drivers take on Alaska at raceway

The ninth annual Alaska/ Hawaii Challenge will be today and tomorrow at Hawaii Raceway Park.

Today, the challenge will pit 16 drag racers from Team Alaska against Team Hawaii. In a special six-second/220 mph funny car match race, nine-time Alaska state champion Jay Childs, in his lightning-fast "Chill Factor" funny car will go up against Hawaii’s New Eagle Cafe alcohol funny car driven by Oahu’s Vince Generalao.

Gates open today at 5 p.m. with qualifying from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The funny car match race begins at 8:30 p.m. with first-round action between Alaska and Hawaii to follow.

The final rounds of the challenge will be tomorrow, and will include another race between the "Chill Factor" and the "New Eagle Cafe" funny car.

Gates open tomorrow at 4 p.m. Qualifying is from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

General admission is $10 for each night with children 7 and under free. Parking is free.

Hawaii Raceway Park is 20 miles west of Honolulu and three minutes south of the H-1 Freeway at Exit 1 near Campbell Industrial Park. For more information, call 841-3724 (DRAG) or log on at www.HRPDragRacing.com.
