Nievera returns to Honolulu; Hirokawa has overdue reunion

HOMECOMING: Martin Nievera, the Philippines-based Island singer, will return for a concert, "Martin Nievera ... Up Close and Personal," at 8 p.m. March 16 at the Hickam Officers’ Club. Jeannette Trevias will be on keyboards (she’s normally with Honolulu but serves as Nievera’s musical director whenever he’s here); H3 will be the opening act. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with pÂp service from 7 p.m. Tickets: $40 through March 1, $45 thereafter. Call 449-1998, ext. 11...

Nievera’s been mentioned as a likely co-star of a yet-to-be-announced fund-raiser at the new DFS Galleria in Waikiki. Stay tuned for details ...

MOSTLY MAGIC: Mai Tai Sing, the hostess and public relations ace at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s Ciao Mein restaurant, remembers magician John Hirokawa from the days when he did tableside magic between Jimmy Borges’ show sets at the old Trappers club, which she used to manage. Over the years, as Hirokawa emerged as a showroom star, she’s always been working and never had the opportunity to see the youngster - now a married family man and father of three - until this week, when she took a night off to catch his "Magic of Polynesia" at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel. "You’re wonderful," she cooed, when they had a long overdue reunion after a 15-year period. "You still look the same," he told her ...

Former Miss Hawaii Melissa Short is off to Paris for a soiree expected to attract unnamed royal families as well as film execs. The gig was arranged by Jerry Harrison, president of Gold Herringbone Productions and Fishbone Talent. Short remarked, "Singing in a palace in Paris ... what’s not to love?
