Isle military forces not involved in attack

Advertiser Staff

None of the U.S. personnel involved in yesterday’s strike on Iraqi military sites were from Hawaii, said Lt. Col. Christy Samuels, USCINCPAC’s media operations and public information chief.

Samuels added that there are no immediate security changes at military bases in Hawaii as a result of yesterday’s action.

Coincidentally, members of the Hawaii Air National Guard will leave Feb. 22 for the Persian Gulf as part of a scheduled rotation, said state Department of Defense spokesman Capt. Charles Anthony. He said the deployment is not in response to yesterday’s air strikes in Iraq.

About 40 members of the 201st Combat Communications Group of the Air National Guard will take part in the deployment. Their mission is to provide secure microwave and satellite communications and air traffic control service to U.S. military forces.

Most of the Hawaii personnel will be deployed for three weeks. The rotations to the Persian Gulf will continue through May.
