Brushfire quickly put out in Maili

Firefighters were called to a brush fire behind the 7-Eleven convenience store in Maili at about 3:30 p.m. yesterday, but it was quickly extinguished.

Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said the flames came within 20 yards of a home, but the fire was reported under control by 3:50 p.m. and extinguished at 5:05 p.m.

Four engines, two tankers and a battalion chief responded to the blaze.


District Court judge named

WAILUKU, Maui — Reinette W. Cooper has been appointed as judge to the Maui District Court. Her appointment is subject to state Senate confirmation.

She is filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Yoshio Shigezawa.

Cooper, a former public defender, is in private practice and a part-time Family Court judge on Maui. She is a graduate of the Southwestern University School of Law.


Attorney general to leave hospital

State Attorney General Earl Anzai spent two nights at Straub Clinic & Hospital this week under observation for hypertension, and was expected to be released yesterday, according to a spokeswoman for Gov. Ben Cayetano.

Cayetano press secretary Kim Murakawa said Anzai, 59, was expected back at work this weekend, when he is scheduled to be host for a gathering of attorneys general from the Western region.

Anzai sought medical attention Wednesday because he wasn’t feeling well, and was later admitted.


Ex-officer gets five years for threats

HILO, Hawaii — A former Big Island police officer was sentenced last week for terroristic threatening, trespassing and promotion of methamphetamines.

Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura placed Sean Kobayashi, 35, on probation for five years and ordered a one-year term, but told the defendant he could avoid jail by entering a residential drug treatment program.

Kobayashi was accused of threatening to kill his mother and his estranged girlfriend, who has since become his wife. He quit the Hawaii County Police Department last June.

At sentencing Wednesday, Kobayashi apologized to his family and for "tarnishing" the department's image.


Judge releases pregnant suspect

A Kapolei woman who is nine months pregnant and charged with sex crimes was granted supervised release yesterday by a Circuit Court judge.

Celeste Flores and her husband, Victor, are accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl over a six-month period. Circuit Judge Reynaldo Graulty ordered Celeste Flores, whose due date is Tuesday, to be on electronic monitoring at the Aiea home of her niece.
