Hawaii improved to 19-4 overall and 10-2 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Wahine have won all five of their road games this season.
SMU dropped to 13-11 and 8-5.
Hawaiis Crystal Lee scored 19 points despite re-spraining her right ankle with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the first half. She sat out the remainder of the half, but returned to play the entire second half.
Dainora Puida came off the bench to add 17 points and 14 rebounds.
"We were up by 13 or 14 points in the second half, and they closed to five with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the game," Hawaii coach Vince Goo said.
The Wahine made 22 of 24 free throw attempts, and held SMU to 26.4 percent shooting from the field.
Hawaii will play Rice tomorrow at Houston.
"Rice is very athletic, very quick and very good at home," Goo said. "We havent won there yet (in three tries). Its always been Houston, we have a problem."
