UH-Hilo gets by HPU, 83-79; BYUH tops Chaminade in OT

Forward Alan Thomas scored a game-high 28 points and center B.J. Rogers added 16 to lead the University of Hawaii-Hilo over Hawaii Pacific, 83-79, last night at Blaisdell Arena.

UH-Hilo improved to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in the Pacific West Conference, 1 1/2 games behind Pacific Division leaders Alaska-Anchorage. HPU fell to 10-14, 5-10.

Thomas was 10-for-16 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Guard Scott Prather, who connected on 3-of-5 3-point attempts and 6-of-6 free throws, chipped in with 15 points and guard Stanley Ibia had 10.

Guard Nick Spajic led HPU with 24 points. Spajic was 9-for-14 from the field, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range. John Avilla added 12 points, Nash Subotic had 11 and Kawika Smith 10.


MORE BASKETBALL

BYUH 80, Chaminade 77: Brigham Young-Hawaii outscored Chaminade 11-8 in overtime last night at McCabe Gym.

BYUH (14-10, 8-7 PacWest), which led 42-37 at the half, and Chaminade (13-11, 7-8) went into the overtime period tied 69-69.

Kerry Hendrickson led BYUH with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Kahi Villa chipped in with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting, Scott Salisbury had 11 and Dean Daley 10.

Jaborri Thomas had a game-high 23 points for Chaminade and David Toya added 17 points.

UH CIRCLE OF HONOR

Three new inductees: Don Botelho, Joyce Kapuaala Kaapuni and Jesse Sapolu chatted during a luncheon yesterday at Bank of Hawaii's downtown headquarters. The three were announced as the latest inductees into the University of Hawai'i's Circle of Honor. The induction ceremony will be at halftime of tonight's UH-Rice basketball game at Stan Sheriff Center.


SOFTBALL

Hawaii 12, Centenary 4: The Wahine erupted for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, turning a slim 5-4 lead into a rout in their first of two games in the Chevron Paradise Classic last night at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.

The Wahine topped Santa Barbara, 5-1, later in the evening but information about the game was unavailable at press time.

Against Centenary, the Wahine scored seven runs in the sixth inning on six hits, three errors and three passed balls.

Natalie Gonzales was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs for the Wahine (8-4, 1-2 Paradise Classic).

Sheri Oronoz scattered five hits in 4¡ innings for her first win in two decisions. Cathrine Olson (1-2) gave up 11 hits and 10 earned runs for Centenary (1-11, 0-4).


GOLF

Waikoloa not tailor-made: Local golfers dropped farther behind the leaders after two rounds of the Taylor Made Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on the Big Island.

The University of Hawaii-Manoa, in 17th place after Thursday’s first round, finished yesterday in 20th place, 39 strokes behind Texas. UH-Manoa has a two-round 83-over par 651 to Texas’ 44-over 612.

UH-Hilo, remains in last place in the 24-team event with a 108-over par 676.

Matt Brost of Texas and Scott Miller of Brigham Young share the individual lead with 5-over par 147s. They each fired second-round 72s yesterday.

UH-Manoa’s Justin Kim, in a four-way tie for 54th place, leads local golfers with a two-round total of 20-over par 162.

The tournament, which ends today, is at Waikoloa’s 7,074-yard par-72 Kings’ Course and 6,566-yard par-70 Beach Course.


OLYMPICS

Water polo star elected: Hawaii’s Chris Duplanty was elected to a four-year term as vice chairman of the Olympic Athletes’ Advisory Council.

Duplanty, a Punahou graduate, played goalie on the 1988, ’92 and ’96 U.S. Olympic water polo teams, winning a silver medal in his first Games and serving as captain in 1996. Last year, he was an assistant coach for the U.S. women’s team, which won a silver medal.

This week, Duplanty was inducted into Hawaii’s Sports Hall of Fame.

The council is composed of and elected by amateur athletes to "ensure communication between the U.S. Olympic Committee and currently active athletes."


FENCING

Fencers to cross swords: The third annual Hawaii Open 2001 International Fencing Competition will be Feb. 24 and 25 at the Aloha Tower Marketplace Pier 10 Terminal.

Fencers from the Mainland, Japan and Hawaii will compete in the event, which is free. Foils and sabers will be used on Feb. 24; epees on Feb. 25. Action begins both days at about 10 a.m. Information: 735-2558.


FOOTBALL

USC coaches lined up: University of Southern California’s head football coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Norm Chow will be among the keynote speakers for a football clinic at the Turtle Bay Hilton Hotel, March 2-4. Cost is $75 for coaches who register by Feb. 24; after that date, coaches pay $85. Information: Rick Sakata 896-2140.
