Hilo deaths appear unrelated

HILO, Hawaii — Big Island police do not believe the weekend death of a man in Hilo is connected to the Jan. 31 slaying of another man.

Although the victims were similar in age and both bodies were found on Hilo roadsides, Lt. Derek Pacheco said yesterday there is no apparent connection.

Police have identified the man whose body was found around 7 a.m. Sunday on the shoulder of the road near the Keaau Underpass, but they had not released his name. He is in his late teens or early 20s.

Pacheco said foul play is suspected, although a cause of death had not been determined.

He would not elaborate.

Meanwhile, no arrests have been made in the Jan. 31 slaying of Kallen James Agliam, 19, whose body was found on the shoulder of the old Hilo Coast Processing Plant road in Pepeekeo. He had been shot once in the chest.

Anyone with information on last weekend's death should call Det. Greg Esteban of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Division at (808) 961-2384, or the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
