Kea'au victim was student from Japan

HILO, Hawaii — The man whose body was found Sunday in Keaau has been identified as a former University of Hawaii-Hilo student from Japan, Big Island detectives said yesterday.

Tetsuya Takahashi, 20, of Fuchu City, Japan, was identified after his parents in Japan were informed of his death. A farmer found Takahashi’s body early Sunday near a highway underpass.

Police also revealed Takahashi died from "blunt force trauma to the head," based on an autopsy conducted yesterday at Hilo Medical Center.

A 16-year-old suspect was arraigned in closed proceedings at Family Court in Hilo yesterday afternoon. His name has not been released because of his age. The youth had been the subject of a warrant issued in February 2000 for failure to appear in Circuit Court on Oahu. That warrant was never forwarded to Big Island police, Lt. Derek Pacheco said in a prepared statement.

Police took the boy into custody following a chase outside of Hilo airport Monday afternoon.

Prosecutors were not available last night to comment on reports that they may seek to have the youth tried as an adult in connection with the Japanese student’s death.
