LEEWARD

Makakilo plan to be explained

The final meeting to inform residents and answer questions about the state Department of Education’s plan to redistrict students attending Mauka Lani and Makakilo elementary schools will be held at 2:15 p.m. tomorrow at the Barbers Point Elementary library.

Leeward District schools superintendent Hazel Sumile called the meeting to explain the rationale for moving students from the two crowded schools about six miles away to underused Barbers Point Elementary beginning next year.

NORTH SHORE

Rising surf closes beach

Surf along the North Shore rose yesterday from four feet in the morning to 8 to 12 feet by late afternoon.

The rapidly rising surf created strong near-shore currents at Waimea Bay, where four people were rescued from the shorebreak.
