More foods developed for women

By Joan Namkoog
Advertiser Food Editor

One of the top food trends this year will be foods designed specifically for women, offering nutrition lacking in their diets. Look for soy, calcium, folic acid and iron linked with B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, flax seed and oats in products like Quaker Oats Nutrition for Women instant oatmeal, Heart and Soy muffin and Great Awakenings soy milk. Energy bar Luna was developed by the makers of Clif bar to be lower in calories. More products for women, including soups and bottled waters, will no doubt be introduced. Soy will be a key ingredient in many of them.

One new product is Harmony cereal by General Mills, a combination of crispy wheat and rice and corn flakes with clusters of vanilla almond oat. The cereal boosts its nutritional value with B-complex vitamins, calcium, folic acid, iron and soy proteins. A 1 1/2 cup serving has 200 calories, one gram of fat, 5 grams of protein, 29 grams of carbohydrate and 2 grams of dietary fiber.

Disposable containers

We’re all becoming accustomed to disposable containers for storing leftovers in the refrigerator and freezer, then reheating them in the microwave. Now Glad is introducing disposable bake ware that can hold food, bake it and serve it. New Glad Ovenware is designed to go into the refrigerator, freezer, microwave, oven and dishwasher. You can prepare lasagna or layered dip, take it to a potluck, heat it in your host’s oven, uncover and serve it and not worry about remembering to take home your baking dish. The new plastic ovenware is oven-safe up to 400 degrees and comes with a snap-on lid. There are two sizes: 9-by-12 inches and 8-by-8 inches. Look for them at your favorite retailer.
