Fire guts Waipahu house

By Rod Ohira
Advertiser Staff Writer

An early morning fire today gutted a three-bedroom Waipahu house at 94-1240 Kahuaina St. where a man's badly decomposed body was found yesterday. A second unrelated fire damaged a Nanakuli house today.

Homicide investigators say no foul play is suspected in the death of the man, 46, who resided at the Waipahu address.

Neighbors called police shortly after noon yesterday complaining of a bad odor coming from the house and responding patrol officers found the body at 12:07 p.m.

The man reportedly was disabled and had health problems, police said. The medical examiner's office is not releasing the man's name until he can be positively identified.

Firefighters from Waipahu station responded to a 2:33 a.m. alarm at the address. Losses are estimated at $150,000 to the structure and $30,000 to the contents.

The house was not occupied.

A second early morning fire today in Nanakuli caused $60,000 damage to a vacant house at 87-1634-E Farrington Hwy. that was being renovated.

Firefighters responding to the 1:12 a.m. alarm had the blaze under control at 1:18 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators were at the scene of both fires today trying to determine the cause.
