WINDWARD

Restaurateur to open Pinky’s

Restaurateur Gene Gunn, who purchased Yum Yum Tree in Kailua, will open Pinky’s Pupu Bar and Grill there in late spring.

Reminiscent of Pinky’s Broiler at the old Pali Palms Hotel, the bar and grill will be a gathering place for Windward residents, said Gunn, owner of Big Island Steak House outlets and Ocean Club nightclub.

With the design being eclectic and nostalgic, the name fit, he said.

The restaurant will emphasize pupu selections and also offer a sushi bar.

LEEWARD

Fun runners raise $15,000

The Rotary Club of Kapolei raised about $15,000 for area schools during its sixth annual Kapolei Family Fun Run held Feb. 19.

Last year about 400 people participated in the run, and with business and corporate support the group raised $14,000 for educational programs and provided scholarship money for two high school seniors.

This year about 600 people participated in the 1.8-mile run around Kapolei Regional Park, including large student groups from Makakilo Elementary and Mauka Lani Elementary schools.

Career, health fair scheduled

Kamaile Elementary School will hold its annual career and health fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow on its Waianae campus.

Professionals from many fields will visit classrooms and discuss health issues and career plans with the students.

For more information, call 697-7110.

NORTH SHORE

Sunset Beach lifeguards busy

Three surfers were rescued yesterday by lifeguards at Sunset Beach.

Lifeguard Lt. Pat Kelly said waves were in the 6- to-10-foot range, with some sets reaching 12 feet. Ocean conditions were good most of the day but began to deteriorate with an afternoon sea breeze, he said.

The National Weather Service predicted surf will be 6 to 10 feet early today, then subside.

Another large swell is expected to arrive late tomorrow on the North Shore.

HONOLULU

Psychotherapy workshop set

A free workshop on healing trauma through body-centered psychotherapy will be held today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at Kapiolani Community College Chapel with clinical psychologist Nalani Minton.

The workshop is sponsored by Papa Ola Lokahi, Kapiolani Community College and the Hakomi Somatics Institute and will use techniques from the Hakomi Somatics Institute, which uses a holistic approach to healing by focusing on how trauma affects the body.

Minton’s work brings together traditional healing techniques used by native peoples, including the Maori and Native Hawaiians. Minton has been a transcendental meditation teacher for 20 years, has taught at the Colorado School of Healing Arts and the Rolf Institute, and was resident psychotherapist for the Boulder County AIDS project.

The workshop is a prerequisite for a longer session this summer.

For information, call Hardy Spoehr, director of Papa Ola Lokahi, at 536-9453, or Minton at 261-4220.
