Conservation corps recruiting
The Youth Conservation Corps 2001 summer program is looking for candidate high school and college students interested in eight-week internships on Maui and Kauai in a range of conservation-related programs and natural resource management.
The program, sponsored by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and Pono Pacific Land Management, works through conservation organizations on Maui and Kauai. Participants also travel to Oahu and Kahoolawe for conservation work and education.
Participants and team leaders are needed. Participants must be incoming high school juniors to incoming college juniors, and team leaders must have completed the sophomore year in college. Participants and team leaders are paid a stipend. The program runs from early June to mid-August.

Student earns spirit award
LIHUE, Kauai Kauai High School junior Lauren Calhoun will be honored as one of the states top youth volunteers in the 2001 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.
Calhoun, 16, of Kapaa launched and saw through a program to establish a place at a local family abuse center where children could do homework.
She obtained donations and furnished the center with furniture, a computer, printer, software and reference books.
She will be flown to Washington in May for the national recognition program of the Prudential Spirit of Community Initiative.
